Market intelligence firm Valour Consultancy has released its latest maritime connectivity report, ranking satcom service providers by their revenue share of the estimated $1.15 billion maritime VSAT market as of the end of 2019.

The Future of Maritime Connectivity – 2020 edition puts Marlink at the head of the list as the largest retail VSAT service provider in 2019, having increased its revenue market share from 23.1% in 2018 to 23.9% in 2019, from an estimated customer base of approximately 7,000 vessels.

The report ranked Speedcast second in the retail VSAT market in 2019, having increased its market share relative to 2018 primarily due to its acquisition of Globecomm. However, the consultants note that the recent financial turmoil experienced by the satcom provider, filing for Chapter 11 in April 2020, may impact its performance in the next 12 months.

In third place is Inmarsat, which combines its direct VSAT sales business with the sale of VSAT satellite capacity and services through its value-added resellers (VARS). Valour Consultancy notes that Inmarsat has made significant progress in moving a portion of its existing L-band customer base to its VSAT offering, whilst also having its VARS commit to signing a number of vessels on to its Fleet Xpress services.

Rounding out the top four in the report is KVH Industries, which has been credited with a successful introduction of its Agile Plans VSAT leasing service to commercial vessels and to the leisure market, opening up a significant number of vessels for new business.
